Fed: Drug drops the kilos with strict diet - trial
Early results of a new trial show a weight loss drug can assist obese people to dropkilos quickly when caloric intake is also severely limited.
Fifty Australians have been involved in an international trial of the weight loss drugorlistat -- Xenical -- which works by stopping fat absorption.
Obesity specialist Professor IAN CATERSON, from the University of Sydney, says mostparticipants in the study weighed around 100kg and had dropped an average eight kilosin 12 weeks.
The obese patients had been able to achieve such reductions by taking the medicationand adhering to a diet of severe caloric restriction.
The results of the study, involving 400 participants including patients in Sydney andAdelaide, have been released by the manufacturer ahead of the launch on to the Australianmarket of a rival chemical aid to weight loss, sibutramine -- Reductil.
Reductil acts on neurotransmitters in the brain governing eating behaviour to promotea feeling of being full.
Like Xenical, it will be available on a doctor's prescription at more than $100 a month,for people who are clinically obese.
